💡 Good to know
- Indians face diabetes and heart risks at a lower BMI, so Indian guidelines use 23 for overweight and 25 for obesity (WHO uses 25 and 30).
- BMI doesn't measure fat directly. A waist over 90 cm (men) or 80 cm (women) is also a warning sign.
- For children, doctors use growth charts by age instead.

Questions people ask
What is a normal BMI for Indians?+
18.5 to 22.9 under Indian guidelines. 23 to 24.9 is overweight and 25 or more is obese, lower than the WHO's 25 and 30.
Why are Indian BMI cut-offs lower?+
South Asians tend to carry more body fat at the same BMI, so diabetes and heart risks start earlier.
